"What kind of music do you play?" is a question Lindsey White gets asked as often as any other artist, with an honest, unheard of answer.
Growing up playing classical piano, she quickly discovered an innate ability to express the piano’s emotions in different ways, by making it laugh, growl, cry, bellow and withdraw using a combination of delicate funk and fascinatingly unconventional groove.
This lead to an inevitable introduction to the guitar - a good friend of the piano, that taught Lindsey’s voice to "wail", [as her friends began to describe it]. Being that this was very different from the ‘vocal jazz’ style her voice was trained to emulate, (and the humble demeanor she was accustomed to) naturally it rebelled for some time before breaking out in live performance, in an act of defiance!
Being a fanatically prolific writer, Lindsey fell deeply in love with composing music and was soon captured permanently by songwriting; it’s enticing and irresistible expression. Her debut EP, "What’s New" soon followed as well as two singles; one of which landed her a spot on a compilation album entitled "The Joshua Project". She also began to lend her ferocious voice to a cappella group, "Mindset" who have managed to harness her unruly wailing and use their combined vocal power for good and not evil (most of the time).
Determined to be taken seriously as a musician, and specifically a female guitar player, she has spent the last 10 years letting the guitar show her how it likes to be played, (dangerously and packed with energy) continually reinventing the personality of the piano (which has changed a great deal since age 4), taking suggestions from her favourite musical inventors, (such as Hendrix, Chopin, Hawksley Workman, CCR, Ben Folds, the Tragically Hip, the Black Crowes, and anything "Motown") writing songs that convey more than she ever could on her own, and wailing like she’s never wailed before.
The result is an eclectic mix of blues and funk immersed in a solid folk-rock foundation. With her stunning vocals, unconventional songwriting style, and groovy four piece band, Lindsey White & her music have brought this sound to a new CD called "This is Now".
...And evidently, if this trend continues, "Now" is only the beginning.
